I would like to know if granular borax will still dissolve as does the powdered in water for soaking fish in (to preserve). Also, does granular really not pack into wing sockets of birds, etc... as does the powdered?

I'm at a loss on this "granular" versus "powdered". Regular 20 Mule Team Borax will work well on birds, but I still prefer Dry Preservative as it's ground much finer and contains both talc and alum along with the borax. Puffed borax works extremely well and it's the kind of stuff that used to be found in clothes detergents like Tide and Duz. It's a little more expensive than regular borax.
Take some of the granular borax put it in a blender and blend away until you have the powder or consistancy you want. You can add talc, and alum if you like and you now have a dry preservative at a fraction of the cost. I have been doing this for a few years now and it works great.
