I am a beginner taxidermist, I've done several mounts and I'm trying to get a good reputation in my work by doing good work and being honest with people and telling them I'm still learning with every mount. A previous customer called me last night and told me that he had recommended me to one of his buddies that wanted to get a deer head mounted and that he saw the deer head in the freezer and that it was not wrapped in anything but just laying in the freezer and it had been there since last Nov. Now I don't have alot of experience with freezer burnt animals in fact none at all and I don't know what to expect or what to tell this guy about anything risks or concerns could anyone please give me some advice on what could happen when I try to skin, tan, and mount this deer or if I would be better off passing on this one.

Freezer burned deer aren't that bad. Go to the drug store and get some insulin syringes. After the deer id thawed simply inject water any where the hide is not soft. Probably will need to inject the ears before turning for sure. As far as the customer. Be up front with him. Educate him about wrapping up his deer. You may want to charge a little more for the time it will take to fix this problem but you will run into it this again for sure.
use some Stop Rot on them. You may need to inject it in the ears. BP
If you get this deer, when you lay it out to skin take a sloppy
wet wrag and put on the eyes and nose. We have had to do this
many times. It wont return to like the day it was shot but you
will be surprised how much moisture will return. Keep wettig the
rags if they dry out. November seems like along time ago but wait
until someone brings one thats been frozen a year or more and then
you need to be more concerned. GOOD LUCK
