Duck head

Submitted by Mike on 8/15/05 at 5:30 PM. ( )

I jut skinned out my first duck and the instructions which I learned from told me to skin as far up the neck as I can and then snip the body off. How do I then go and skin around the head? And also how do you then use the real head off the duck?

what are you using

Mike, I would be interested in what you are using to learn from. There are nany technics used for bird taxidermy and wondered whose you are studying. Breakthrough Magazine has had many articals and there are many good self help videos and books as well that would be of great value to you. You would be doing yourself a great favor in investing in several of each to get a clearer view of what is to be done. Skinning out the head and wrapping a body are easier taught through pictures and videos then via an e-mail. My best, Jim

use an artificial head

you should first separate the delicate skin from the edge of the beak. skin down but do not snip the body off. you should cut the head off of the neck and make a mold of it for a plaster head. or else buy an artificial head from a taxidermy retailer. if you use the original head the beak will shrivel up. thats my 2 cents of it
