Brid Bone Boiling (for articulation)

Submitted by Katherine on 8/17/05 at 4:47 PM. ( ) 69.86.139.128

I have decided to articulate the skeleton of a quail I happen to have, as the bird is too
damaged to be taxidermed. I've cleaned most of the meat off the bones, and I'd like to know if it's safe to boil these little bones in detergent, soak in degreaser, and then whiten.
Any advice on this subject would be greatly appreciated.
I'm also curious as to how other people pin little bones together...glue? wire?
thanks

I don't know about boiling

I can't speak to boiling bird bones, cause I have beetles. But as far as the articulation part I'd recommend this.

I just got his bear book - It is great, shows all the bones, where they are located - and how he puts them together. He's got a bird book too, you may want to check it out. Lee (the author) will answer any questions you have too.

Maceration

Put the bones in water and let it sit for a week (in warm weather) the meat will rot off the bones and it will not compromise the integrity of the bones. Boiling will ruin the bones.

Beetles

Hi,
I can clean your quail and whiten the bones with a non-bleach whitening process and then send them back to you so you can articulate the skeleton. With such a small animal I would not use maceration. There are a lot of small bones in the feet and other parts of the body. With beetles the bones come out clean and they will not get lost in a bucket of stinking water. If you are interested send me an email and I will do it for 25.00.
