How Long Can I Refrigerate?

Submitted by Andy on 8/19/05 at 9:48 AM. ( greenacres@tcennet.net ) 64.19.94.22

I have a bobcat I am working on. I tanned it myself sometime ago with a brush on tan. I am just now getting around to mounting it. I rehydrated it as recommended (handful of salt to a gallon of water) and sweat it overnight. I have decided to use a replacement nose for it. How long can I safely leave this cape in the refrigerator before causing any problems? Thanks for your help!

Mount it up

There is no real way that we can tell how long your skin will last in the refrigerator without examining it and knowing its' condition during every stage of tanning. All refrigerators aren't even set at the same temperature throughout. I would mount up the animal with the current nose and when dry, simply cut out the area and set the artificial nose in, assuming the real nose doesn't already look good.

No Need to mount it ASAP

I have left tanned capes refrigerated for up to a week and a half, the only thing you have to worry about is mildew forming on the skin after that time frame.

i wouldn't be too scared....

Mount as soon as possible or put in freezer between breaks. the longer it is in the wet stage the more chance of slippage. thawing doesnt take long on a tanned hide. IMO
