Repairing a wolf hide for life-sized mount

I have a tanned wolf hide that has a few spots on the hide that are "low" on fur. Not holes, just spots where the fur is thin or bare due to natural shedding and scars. The biggest spot is about 2 by 4 inches. They are not bad, but I bought a nice piece of wolf hide that matches my wolf for repairs anyhow. So my question is: Do I want to make repairs BEFORE or AFTER the hide has been rehydrated? What would be the best way to do this?

Also- The ears have not been split... Should I do this before or after rehydrating?

rehydrate first

After the hide has been rehydrated........for both questions....
anything smaller than an inch in diameter can be cut out football shape and sewn shut. No need to mess with patches unless the spot is larger than that, unless there are two or three very close together.
