Do you have to do any type of preservintg of the nut when mounting it in a squirrels paws.

As long as they're dry and stay dry, they'll remain hard as a rock forever. I had one in a squirrel I mounted for over 30 years and it was there when the house burned down. Probably still there in the ashes someplace. LOL
