Problems with skinning/fleshing first deer

Submitted by Stinkfist on 8/28/05 at 9:09 PM. ( ) 65.144.94.1

I'm working on a deer that has been in the freezer for about 4 years and am having problems. First, a place in the cape is folded together and I can't spread it apart. The ears are really giving me fits. I managed to separate one ear with my ear openers after many cussings but the ear is so stiff I am unable to turn it inside out. Any help would be appreciated, and please just people who want to help answer this. I know all about the search button and have looked but frankly don't have time to go through all the posting to find what I'm looking for. Thanks again for any advice.

Check it out using the word "freezer burn". Thats what you have. A head in the freezer dries out pretty good. For your first attempt, its a real bugger, as even a fresh speciman can be a challenge initially. Theres a ton of info in there on freezer burn and rehydration. Hope it works out for you!

Buy some stop rot. It works miracles on freezer burn.

John,
I tried stop rot and it didn't seem to help. I assume that I didn't use it right, are you suppose to let it soak for a certain amount of time? I didn't because I was afraid of the cape ruining because I was taking so long on the ears.

put it in Rittel relaer

you didn't have freezer burn, or freezer drying, these two guys had that.

Sounds like you got a little nervous, and tried to hurry a little too much.

If it's not too late in the game for you, read these articles and see if you can't still adapt to suit your needs.

Thanks Glen

Thanks for the article! I witnessed Stop Rot Magic with my own eyes. I bought a freezer burned Mt. Lion that took a little too long to get to me and had started to smell a little ripe. I brushed stop rot on, re bagged it and put it in the fridge. In one hour I went out to check it and it was amazing. There was surprisingly no slip and was completely cured of the freezer burn. Tanned Beautiful!

Thanks from me also Glen

I wish I would have seen those articles a couple of days ago, whould have saved me some aggrevation. I'm gonna give stop rot another try and see if I can't salvage my cape or chaulk it up to one of them learn from mistakes deals. Thanks to all who replied.
