Household Pickling Agent?

Submitted by Lee D. on 9/19/05 at 5:38 PM. ( Blackmageshadow@hotmail.com ) 198.77.40.99

Hi,
I've been all over Google.com looking for anything that can be a household substitute for a pickle agent. Someone told me that a Borax mixture can be used after the salting stage. I was also told that concentrated lysol can be used (in the case of fish skins). But I'm trying to tan a piece of sheep skin, It's been salting for 2 days (salted twice).
Let me know what some of you have done, and has it worked well?
Thanks!
Lee D.

"Someone " lied to you

BIG TIME on all accounts. Don't ever ask "someone" again.

It's a test

It's just a test skin, little 8x10" shaved wool piece w/ holes galore. I'm just trying to see if there's a household alternative.

Just buy...

... a quart of saftey acid. The wasted time you spent doing research would have paid for it twice over.

Saftee Acid

Saftee acid is well worth the money. I have used vinager before and I guess it worked but I wouldn't advise using it (hides smell like pickled rotten meat), It's to hard to get the PH right.

Forgot to add

Ends up being cheaper to buy Saftee acid anyway and you will know it works.

White vinegar

If your bent on doing it this way. Buy lots of it and use it straight or nearly straight. I've never taken the pH right out of the bottle but you don't want to dilute it very much. Add your salt to the vinegar and keep borax the heck out of the picture.

This can also...

I believe there is a citric acid recipe which is easy to get.
