HELP WITH MOUNTING A BARN OWL

Submitted by J.R on 9/20/05 at 4:44 PM. ( Harpmail@aol.com ) 195.93.21.98

I Live in the UK and I have just obtained a deceased barn owl with the legal paperwork to possess it. It's frozen and in excellent condition. I want to have a go at mounting it myself on a barn owl form. I've never tried taxidermy before but I've heard owls are easy to mount. I know I have to skin it, flesh it and preserve it etc. But do I leave the beak on etc... etc. Can anyone tell me what the process is, or where to get the info.

Thanks,
Newbie

NOT THAT EASY

If taxidermy was that easy everybody would be doing it! Birds of any kind are very hard to mount.. And yes you need to keep the beak.

You need to get a book or video on bird mounting first. I doubt you will find any step by step on here or even in the archives. But it sounds like you are not experienced enough to give it a go without some instrucions to reference as you go.

practice

Do some practicing first. Get some pheasants their a little more apt to not fall apart on you as you try to mount them. Do a few bird mounts first of different kinds starting with something easy like a pheasant. Wouldnt want to ruin something nice like that owl dont rush it.
