Need help mounted elk and I have a dark line about 12" long across the shoulder where it looks like I'm missing hair. Do you know what would cause this? I didn't really notice it the first day I finished mounting it. Do you know if there is any way I can fix this?

thanks

It sounds like the hair was raked when fighting. When the hair is chopped off like this, the darker underhair shows, making the dark line. When the cape is wet it might not have been as apparent.About the only way to fix this would be to cut out all the chopped hair and sew it back together. It's not as hard as it sounds.Should take 30 minutes to an hour tops. It's a good idea, before mounting,to lay a cape flat on the table, brush it smooth and these areas can be seen and repaired. It's a little easier to repair before mounting, but still not a big deal. After almost 40 years I still have to go back and cut one of these out occasionally. If the line bothers you,by all means cut it out. You'll be surprised how quick it goes and it won't be such a big thing next time.Good luck.

Thanks a lot

Jim~

Thanks a lot for the information I really appreciate it. I do have one question though; the mount has been drying for 4 days, how can i cut it out and pull it if it is too dry to pull together?

Matt

keep spraying that area with a spray bottle

wrap a towel over it an tack it up, then it'll soak back up enought to cut and sew
