Can I leave the cartilage in?

I have been taking the cartilage out of the ears when I mount gameheads. I have read that you can skip this process, and mount with the cartilage left in the ear. Can you still use plastic liners with this process? Do you have to use bondo? Won't the hair slip? If anyone can give me some advice, I would appreciate it. Thanks, Dave

....one of the things I've learned (from research and experience) is that using a plastic ear liner with the cartilage left in results in an ear that is too thick and doesn't look right.

Leave the cartilage in and use bondo or take the cartilage out and use an earliner.

Well!

Hey Dave, I have tried using liners and keep the cartliage in but it dosent look good at all,I used the bondo method and the ear liner with out the cartliage and they both look very nice. The thing i can thank of the diff. is money. If you use bondo its a little more cheaper. If you use the liners you just got to be carefull and not tear your ear. Good luck Leo

Its easy to understand

If you leave the cartilage in the ear. Then add something else you have to come up with an ear that is thicker than nature. and as such will not look normal. Some times I think ear liners are too thick. But we are mere mortals. and can only do so much. I think that in any case the cartilage should be removed weather you use a liner or not. if accuracy is your desire. Try ear magic. It can be applied as thin as the cartilage

take your time

Dave, Do what I tell you and it WILL work. Turn your ear leave the cartiledge in, tan your skin or preserve it however you want to, then after you have done that, and that process is complete, soak your ear in some acetone for a few minutes(10 or 15 minutes), then dry them off really good with a towel, then take a wire brush and ruff up the cartiledge side of the ear real good, then repair you holes, if any with super glue gel and a small piece of skin, cut off of the ear cartiledge, if you are careful you can peal up some of the membrane that is on the ear cartiledge to patch up the hole with, this works real good. Then, mix up some fiber glass resin in with you bondo until it gets real runny,(usually 1 pint can of resin to 1 gallon can of bondo, is good enough), use the top off of your bondo can,(the plastic top) to mix up your bondo with, get a paint stirring stick from your local hardware store,(they are usually free)to dip out the bondo with, put two dips of bondo inthe plastic top, then use very little of the cream hardener,(because you want it to set up slow), this will give you plenty of time to work the detail into your ear, after you mix up the bondo and hardener real good, add some fiberglass chop in with your bondo,(don't get too heavy with the chopped fiber glass, it will cause you to have a hard time working the bondo), remember we are wanting a thinnn ear when we get done. Using ear openers, put the bondo mixture into the ear and work it around inside the ear until you get a uniform consistency of thickness inside the ear, work the excess out of the ear butt, use referance for shape and thickness, feel of a deer's ear when it comes in, or after you have killed one, and get an idea of how it feels, if you have too, get a micrometer and size it to be sure, but doing a good bondo ear is a feel thang, you have to develop a feel for it, but it can be done and done very efficiently, and it is alot easier that using ear liners, and it is stronger and it won't drum life earliners eventually always do. B's comments were a little too sagey, jason was just wrong! Try this and it will work out really good for you, and with time and practice you will get really good at it. And it will be thinner than an ear liner, guaranteed.
