Drying the hide after salted

Submitted by NoAh on 9/12/05 at 11:59 AM. ( ) 68.215.222.233

After I clean my hide in the rinse and salt it, can I let it sit in the sun salted to dry out? I have been running into a little hair slippage, and I think its because my hide stays in my basement salted and it takes several days to dry out even under a fan. I think I can dry the hide quicker in the sun. Your thoughts?

The capes will dry hard in 3-4 days if you put a good dehumidifier next to the capes in your basement.. give it a try..

I could get the cape to dry in a day being outside in the sun. Is there any problems with this?

Also, What should the humidity of my basement be?

.......Put it in the sun! You can hang it outside in some sort of shelter where the air can get to it and help dry it, but not in the sun. That's just asking for problems. In humid weather it takes time, and sometimes they never dry as hard as you would like.

No to hot weather

I have the best luck where it is cool. The raw skin is no different than raw meat. You will have little to no slip if you salt in the basement where it is cool, use a fan if the basement is dry, if you have a wet damp basement, then you need a dehumidifier anyway to help it dry. The sun will only speed up the slip, and help it rot faster.
