Building a Studio/Shop

Submitted by Jason on 10/17/05 at 4:05 PM. ( ) 205.188.117.11

I am going to be constructing a building to use as a studio/shop and was wondering what would be a good size (?x?) and layout to start with and what all I need to include in the constuction to make it a comfortable and functional taxidermy studio i.e. tables, equipment, ect. Thanks in advance for you help.

Never big enough. If you design it with the plan to add on later it will be easier IF and when you do add on.

How big?

How big depends on several things; your budget, how serious you are about doing taxidermy, how much room you have etc. I am almost done with one I started about 2 months ago. Mine is 16 x 24. already wondering if it will be big enough, but I figure if I get to the point where I have enough business to outgrow this one I will add on; I built the 16 x 24 in such a way that I can easily add on to it.
It is a good idea to draw everything out to scale (freezer, work table, fleshing machine table etc.)I feel mine is mimimum at best, but we all have to start somewhere.

mine is 16x24 and it is not big enough at all, especially when you have a big rock saw in it.lol. im working on my next building, im thinking 30x30 which im sure when done will not be big enough.lol

Mine is 24 X 40 and Not big enough.Freezers, salt room ,sinks ,work tables, washer and dryer take up a lot of space. When you have two or three tings going at the same time it gets tight.

Size Matters?

Allright guys I was originally thinking 24x24 but I think I am going to go with 30x30 I would rather have the room and not need it than to need it and not have it. Where can I go to find out about the tools and equipment I will be needing, along with some help in laying out the the equipment and tables and sinks and stufff to make a comfortable and functional shop? Thanks again!

Don't forget her car

Add a garage door and a bay for her car. Even though you will have something else in that spot, make her a part of the plans and she will go along with the whole idea better. It's nice to have a spot to pull the car in and tinker with it anyway.

Mr. T thats a great idea. But this is !MY! shop and she seems to be behind it 100%. It almost seems that she is more excited about this adventure than I am. And that is pretty crazy! But anyways thanks to all for your help.
