Labeling Capes

Submitted by Mike on 10/20/05 at 3:04 PM. ( ) 208.186.200.1

I'm looking for ideas on marking capes when they are off at the tannery. I realize a lot of people use punch codes. I've also seen plastic tags. Could use some advice on the pros and cons of each and where to buy the tags.

Thanks,
Mike

Punch Code

I punch my own code in the forehead of my deer capes. That's one place where it can't be confused with a tanner's code. And it will never get shaved off, at least not by the tanner I use.

Dixieland Supply caries tags, if you wish to do that. I've also used colored cable ties to differentiate different sequenses of numbers. Just make sure that your tanner is OK with the tagging that you're doing. You wouldn't want the capes or hides coming back with their tags all removed!

Double punch

I always double punch mine. Once on the forehead and by the bullet hole (going to cut it out anyway) unless it's a small entrance hole then I'll punch bottom of brisket.
