Hey I was wondering if anyone knew of an inexpensive way to build a mounting stand. I am just getting into taxidermy as a hobby and dont want to sink alot into a stand. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My first "mounting stand" was a 2x4 in a vise on a bench. Years later I used the Stanley Shop mate to hold the 2x4. At one time WASCO sold an old school desk as one. They removed the seat and put a pipe with a "T" on it and the desk flip up top was listed as a "storage unit". Use a little ingenuity.

George, thanks alot I was in my garage looking around and with a little imagination I turned an old car engine stand into a mounting stand. Hey I may "patent" the idea. HA HA! Thanks everyone for your input

Thanks Tim...

I was going to weld one up untill I saw your post,I have one at
a friends house that I had forgot about,if it will hold about 800
lbs.of Big Block Chevy iron,I'm sure it will handle any type of taxidermy work.

That engine stand will work I used one on my first deer. If you are like me you will useit until you trip once over those 3-4 inch high legs. Then you will go let a welder build you one. Or do it yourself if you have or can get a hold of a welding machine. Good luck guys I hope your new found stand work out for you better then it did for me.

My stands came form the core of rotary parts bins. Look around salvage yards and you can probably find some that have been tossed away. The cast iron base is flush with the floor so you won't trip over it and it it's diameter is large enough for stability except on large game heads...I keep a cinder block around to counterbalance the big stuff. Anyway, after you slide the rotary bins off, cut the center support post to the desired length, and weld a 2" pipe coupling to it and then go from there with the contruction of the stand.

Hope this helps...
