The biggest tip I (or anyone else) can offer you is start on the left side of your screen and click on the search button or go through the 'beginners' forum. Spend a couple days/weeks reading those articles and you should be able to extract enough information to get your feet wet. good luck
See if you can get an ordering catalogue from WASCO and McKenzie also, Looking at alot of the tools in there can give you some ideas as to what you can purchase locally. They also have detailed directions on some of the items they sell which will give you an idea as to how it works. I agree with Tomdes above about searching the "orange button" to the left, there is tons of valuable information there.
I have been into taxidermy only for about 2 years. I moved in with a taxidermy family. And when I asked questions about it the Owner told me to come to this site and read. so I did. I read the archives for months. I read every question, and answer in almost every category. My understanding, and knowledge of Taxidermy became so great that I could answer questions, without ever having really done taxidermy. Then I went back to the shop, and asked The boss if I could try doing something. He gave me a deer cape and asked if I knew how to turn and flesh. I said I thought so, and I began. but rather than ask every time I came to something I was not sure of, I would just stop, and try to think my way through it. Or watch one of the other guys to see. One day as I peered Over at Tenbears to see how he turned the nose of a bear. He looked at me over the top of his glasses and smiled, shaking his head in approval. He has since told me, how much he respected the fact that I was willing to put forth 100% of the effort to learn, and not looking for the quick easy way. I now work in the shop part time with the guys, and yes I actually do customer mounts. In fact the last one, I did when I asked someone to check it over. They replied. You know what a deer is supposed to look like. It's fine. without ever looking.
Two years from nothing to Professional Taxidermist. You can do it to. And here is the tip you asked for. Put forth the effort, use the mind God gave you. do all you can for yourself. Then when you become stuck. And only then. Ask these guys here for help. they will freely give it, and teach you as they did me. (Not Taking any credit from my new family)
one thing i might add
the bug if your going to catch it is a strong one
its like the first time a person goes deer hunting
as a kid i knew from almost the first step in the woods i was going to be a hunter
ive had the same experience with taxidermy
the first time i tried to skin something to mount i had a very similar feeling
i dont think i have ever felt so alive and exited
i honestly dont know which i love better
killing a deer or mounting one
but
mr rulez remember this as i got busier over the first few years
i didnt have a whole lot of time to hunt
and looking back and thinking now
i think i like mounting them more
just me
i hope you bet the bug
good learning paul e
