I have done a half of dozen deer, fox, racoons, and a few birds, but have never done a boar yet. I shot a medium sized sow boar this weekend that weighed in at 130 lbs. I am going to do a shoulder mount on it to practice. Is there anything that I need to know that is really different from the deer. The cape is in my freezer and I am going to skin the head out and flesh it then salt it this weekend. Is the process the same as a deer, the fleshing turning and splitting? Do I need to do a relieve cut on the top of the skull so I can adjust and add clay to the earliners in the mounting stage or just tube it all the down to the nose. How is the nose cartilage, the same a deer and do the ears turn the same as a deer.

Just like you said. Do not make a relief cut, just tube skin it to the nose. Are you using an artificial nose, or the real one? I hate trying to flesh out the real nose but it can be done. The cartilage in the nose is alot different than a deer. there are alot of different muscles that a boar uses to move its nose. Good luck.

is that there's no such thing as a "sow boar". It's either a sow or a boar. I think you got a sow hog (vs. a boar hog?). Assuming you're doing an open mouth, unlike most deer mounts, you'll need to pin the lip skin to the mannikin mouth then after it dries you need to fill and smooth over the edge of the lip on into the mouth with magic smooth and coat the whole inner mouth with same. When you paint over it will look smooth like the inside of a hog mouth is. Since this is your first, I'd buy a mannikin that has pre-molded jaws where the jaw set falls right in without having to dremmel. I like to install my jaws after I have prepped the mouth with the majic smooth and pre-painted.
