Simmering Skull Plates

Submitted by E on 11/17/05 at 7:11 PM. ( ) 24.121.62.3

I have a couple of deer racks that I am going to mount. I have looked through the archives and can't find how to keep the water and Sodium Carbonate from getting on the antlers. Most of the remaining meat and tissue is around the burr of the antler. I read once that some wrap tin foil around the antler then seal with packing tape, anybody do it this way? I suugestions would be appreciated.

This time type "how to clean antlers" You will see that most of us do not boil antlers anymore. Also the question about cleaning skull plates was just asked recently.

2x2

Wire a 2x2 to the antlers right above the base, and get a stainless steel or similar boling kettle. Drop the skull plate into the water /sal soda mix, and adjust your 2x2 so no area of your antlers bases touch the water. ( The 2x2 lays across the top of the kettle, which holds the antlers out of the water. This will preserve the authenticity of the tree bark stuck in the burrs from rubbing and so fourth.
