critter tails

In the Mammal Breakthrough manual Ed Thompson mounts his tails individualy from the body of the squirrel using dry preservative.I want to do the same thing but instead tan the rest of the squirrel hide to be mounted later and then installing the dry preservative treated tail at that time.In using dry preservative the bottom of the cut skin will shrink and curl, how does one make a smooth junction from the base of tail and body on skin and also hide the seam?

Why not just mount them at the same time

A little clay at the base of the skin to body junction will smooth it out, or some caulk. If you must do the tail seperatly, you need ot cut the skin of the tail a little shorter than the artifical tail nad then let the skin of the mounted animal cover the exposed part. You can supper glue it around it so that you seam is not noticable.

On a prime furred squirrel.

The connection won't show. Indent a little into the foam to tuck the seams in. The wire will give you support. Some caulk will smooth the skin out. Just don't get caulk on the hair.
