i was looking at the kits on the WASCO site. my son really wants me to try the rump kit. but it comes with a dry preservative and skin prep. i thought i had read the dry preserve wasn't very good? should i order this kit or buy the stuff sep. and try something like the Mc kenzie tan? i dont think it will be great but i dont want it to stink or go bad in a year either. is there any other place that sells kits like that?
this will be the first project for me next will be a deer head. i have ordered the video for that.

D.P. it

Considering you are not a taxidermist and a rump is pretty hard to do wrong I would just D.P. it and be done with it. Getting into tanning and P.H level with pickling is not rocket science but at the same time it is involved. Make sure you cleaned the hide of all the meat and membrane as best you can and them rub the D.P. on the skin real good. Follow the directions and you can't do it wrong.

Good luck

Thanks

thanks,
i just wanted to make sure it was a good kit before i bought it . to buy the stuff sep. was alot more expensive, and i though that would be fun to do with my son while i study the tape i ordered.

WASCO sells a tan that is real good that is called krowtan. I use it on all of my deer mounts. you dont have to worry about all the ph test or the pickling stage, you just mix it like the instructions.

Donna, you're on the right track

If you DP it, make use you use an epoxy hide paste. That rump has cleavage that will drum if you don't use a good hide paste. As for tanning, if you plan on tanning, use a good tan like the McKenzie you mentioned. You'll be pleased with the results.
