I shot the best buck of my life recently and was smart enough to take it in to a local taxidermist. I chose him through word of mouth, and his displays looked good.
When I came through the door, there was a sign up that said "White tail deer $295" Now,that's quite a bit higher than what I paid about 10 years ago in highschool, but I'm in a big city now, and there's inflation. So i go and pick out a droop mount, get ready to pay up, and its all the sudden $525 because the droop mount is more difficult. Is this true? I thought a form was a form?
Next question: I have 10 oz of Lutan F. Is that enough to do a spike and the rest of the cape from my big buck? The package says "more than enough for a white tail" Well the white tails in Tx are way smaller than the northern ones, so is that enough Lutan F. for these little texas deer?

Both a Hummer and a Kia have 4 tires and a steering wheel both are considered vehicles. But price isn't the same.
My base price is 495.00 striaght upright, turn it add 25.00 more, droop it add 50 more, wall pedastal it add 95.00 more, white banded eyes 15.00 more, open mouth 100.00 more ect. That is how he runs his business. Why question it if you like the work and the reccomendations you have heard?
Just like a truck add more pay more.
Sounds like a reasonable business man to me.
Well I see that not only has my question regarding the price of a shoulder mount already been asked, my query regarding the amount of Lutan F to use has also been answered. I fully understand if my posting is removed.
One thought first. I am on another forum where they have these things called "stickies" Whoever runs this might like them.
The way they work is like this:
Some dope like me asks a question that's been answered a hundred times; and a nice person takes the time to type out a great, encompassing answer. The administrator takes that response, maybe retitles it, and has a special section for it that people see before they read the other posts ( they just see the title--not the actual post)
For example, I wanted to know how to skin a skunk without stinking to all heck. Well I ran a search "skinning a skunk" and came back with like 18 links, and really there was only a few real answers..so it took a ton of time looking through them.
Of course this might mean more work for the administrators, and this site is awesome as it is now. Maybe they wouldn't have to delete so many dumb postings and posters wouldn't have to search through so many useless posts.
thanks

you make complete since. I guess i was more shocked with inflation. My taxidermist in high school did one for us for about $175. Of course, if i were a better hunter I would have found my way back to a taxidermist...

The only time I charge more for a different pose is if I have to alter the form. It is no more work to mount a deer with a slight turn to the left or right than it is to mount one straight. Anyone who says it is is full of it. I understand trying to make a buck but to nickle and dime someone to death with piddly things like you mention is silly. A droop mount if it is a sneak is not any harder than anything else.
paid 10 cents a gallon for gas way back when, now im pissed at the local gas stations for charging 2.35! wow come on dude get up with the times!
Of course, a guy charging $295 needs gimmicks to make a living I guess. A shoulder mount is a shoulder mount as long as I don't have to alter the form or add extras such as dioramas. I've seen guys play games with the "weight" of the deer or the "number of points" on the deer. Just a lack of professionalism in my opinion.
