I have been fiddling around doing a little taxidermy but not much. I have always thought it would be fun to do. Im not looking to make a career out of it but maybe something on the side or just for myself. Im just wondering if it would be worth going to one of the week long classes to get a good start or if it would be better to just use the books and videos and then maybe a class sometime down the road. I know you cant become a taxidermmist in a week and i dont want to waste my money and i would like to start out on the right foot. Just thought I would see what your thoughts were. Thanks

I'm sure alot of guys and gals on here will tell you that your gonna have to be the judge of what you wanna do with your own carrer. But now as far as learning taxidermy. A week long class never hurt anyone. It may give you some insight as to what to expect. The best advice I can give you is to do your best and find someone local who does taxidermy and ask them if by anychance you could set in and watch, ask if they need help, Let them know you have an interest.
You never know they may just let you help out. I started out with video's then made my mind up to do what I just mentioned and learn from a very well experianced taxidermist the hands on experiance is by far the best experiance I have gotten. Not to mention the friends and other taxidermists you will meet along the line on the forum that are always helpful.George roof may be able to point you in the right direction as far as up comming events in your area not to mention even check out the training forum there maybe something in there that will help get your feet wet also. best of luck. This is one of those things where you never stop learning, be it a hobby or career. Anywhere that you can pick up new information is good. I learn a lot just by reading this forum. Classes, videos, books or your local taxidermy society/convention. Most of the pros that answer on here don't mind beginner questions (unless you haven't bothered to check the archives) and it's a great source. The important part is to have fun! I'd start out with a book, like the Breakthrought manuals, so you sort of know the terminology and a little about the process when you go into your class.
.....Miles ahead if you spend a couple years learning as much as you can before you consider taking a course like you are thinking about. Something like a week long class would be overwhelming for someone without a good basis to start with. You'd just be wasting your money to do it before that.
Join your state association and go to the convention to start with. Books and videos are great too. If you're still enthused after a couple years of that, the class would be the next step.
Thanks for all your advice. I can't believe how helpful you all are. Most forums you get a bunch of smart remarks. I think I will hold off on the class and see how it goes. Thanks again.
