Hope you enjoy it! I was out there for extensive training about 10-12 years ago. He might remember me. Take a lot of reading material with you in the evenings at the motel.
Also, it will be a good time to take some close up photo's of his large deer he has in the back yard. I think I took 8-10 rolls and still use them for ref.today. Enjoy.

Joe is a great guy that knows deer. Be sure to stop by and see one of the better fish guys (although he does almost strictly antler restoration now) Tom Sexton while you are there. Both guys are great people and good teachers. I took a week with Joe and a week with Tom and both were well worth the money/time.

...Iowa's deer shotgun season? I would think Joe might be a bit busy with business and I'm surprised he'll be training so close to the season (Unless he himself doesn't do the bulk of the take-in type deer work?)
There are many places to stay in that Iowa City corridor. Check out some of the smaller hotels in nearby West Branch if you want to save some money.
While you're in the area some sights to see (if I were you) would be to check out one of the Hawkeyes dual meets at Carver arena. Their wrestling squad should be one of the tops in the country this year and they should be very entertaining (and emotional as those Hawkeye wrestling fans are nuts!) It'll be loud.
Also the nearby Amana colonies offer all types of things to do and eat. Some of the best jerky and cheeses in the country can be purchased in the Amanas.
The Coralville reservoir has some decent duck hunting and things should be in full swing in another week or two. The water is down a bit this year so you should be able to walk in. Lots of cover I hear though.
Then of course, pheasant hunting is always a staple in Iowa. The public lands get hit pretty hard on the opener, but (again) the Coralville area should offer you some decent chances at some birds.
Then, depending on what you're into - you've always got the party-scene in downtown Iowa City. Lots of purdy college girls!
Solon itself has Lake Mcbride and you might be able to wet a line if it's not frozen up.
All of the above things to do are within 15 minutes of Solon. Enjoy your stay!
