is finishing wax normally used in place of paint or are the two used together? I know you dont wax the inside of the ears but I am trying to figure out if I need to buy any wax at all if I plan on airbrushing.

In my opinion wax is far gone. Apoxie sculpt comes in colors and is far better to work with. No matter which medium you use some painting is still going to be required.
There are epoxies out there that are far better than any wax. Why would you want to use something that was obsolete 30 years ago?
