Will my fish stink or rot?

Submitted by JB on 11/29/05 at 7:07 PM. ( ) 146.57.39.2

I mounted my first fish- a large mouth bass. I scraped for hours trying to get all of the meat, etc.. off of the skin. However, I was unable to get it all off and decided to mount it anyway, since I was just practicing and will probably ditch the mount anyway. Since there was still a little meat left on the skin, is it going to stink or rot after it dries?

if you don't already have one get yourself a fish fleshing tool. They are like 10 dollars and worth every penny. I know Van Dykes carries them, and would assume that WASCO, Research Mannikins, etc. all have them. Also I dump a little borax on the skin as I flesh, this helps the tool grab the meat and kind of cleans the skin. Also I recomend using liqua-cure to cure the skin and make sure you spray your fish with sealer after it is mounted and dried. Good luck and keep at it!

It is really easy to scrape off the meat with a butterknife, going in a tail-to-head motion. Major Suppliers also sell "Fish Tan" that aid in preserving/deoderizing the skin.

Spoon..

A spoon works well too. But I would not scrape lenth wise on the skin as it will stretch it.
