and then get your pickle ready and put it in. Make sure your ph is 1.5-2.0. You shouldn't have to make the hide rock hard before you pickle. I rough flesh, turn ears, eyes, nose, lips, salt, roll up hide, leave it on a slanted surface so excess moisture can drain for 24 hours, shake off excess salt and put in the pickle, leave it for a couple days, thin hide and final flesh, put back in pickle for a couple days, then remove, rinse and neutralize, and proceed on with tannning. Follow the directions given with the type of tan you use, but make sure to leave in the pickle for at least 36 hours.
That ought to take you another couple of days with the orange button. If you don't rehydrate it the pickle will not absorb into the hide and do its job.
To save you a lot of time: soak your cape in a salt brine of 1 pound of salt to every gallon of cold water. I usually mix it up hot to get the salt to dissolve good, then let it cool before adding my capes. It should be occassionally stirred and checked until it is pliable, normally overnight, then you can drain and add it to the pickle solution.
Thanks for the info.
