L.Pickle;
any acid bath, used to lower the pH to establish the plumping of a skin for tanning.
M.pH;
Acids taste sour, are corrosive to metals, change litmus (a dye extracted from lichens) red, and become less acidic when mixed with bases. Bases feel slippery, change litmus blue, and become less basic when mixed with acids.

any hide that is right off the animal and has not been proccesed in any way.

Any animal that is whole, that is not skinned out.
CC. Tanning oils;
One of many oils can be made from Menhadden Sardines.
Comes in two primary types bisuphanted and sulphanted
one will mix with warm water and penerate the hide easier.
The other is used for previously oiled hides.

When you check out the article on hidetanning.net, you will find a link that takes you into the Protein Data Bank, and you will find that plain old water can also create a mimic to acid swell.
