how do you know you over neutralized?

how do you know you over neutralized? If it is just slipping, then you need to get it mounted very carefully and gently and GET IT DRY!

If you actually over neutralized then put it back in the pickle for about 15 minutes then reneutralize.

ya i am not sure what i did, or if it is over nutralized. just never had any slip problems before. using KROWTANN can i put it in a pickle bath now? and then renutralize it?

Ronnie, you need to check up on tanning

This "over-neutralizing" isn't a factual term. It may stay in a neutralizing bath too long according to the directions, but neutral (pH of 7-8) IS neutral. It won't cause slippage if the hide is tanned. It just STOPS the tanning. Now, if your pH was allowed to go higher by adding lets say soap, lye, or borax to the neutralizing bath and go to 10-12, hair would certainly fall out. Is the epidermis actually sloughing off (slipping) or is hair falling out? Big difference.

Your slippage is likely the result of poor field care or something you may have done before it ever hit the tan.

Back in the Krowtann now.

Anyway aside for GR. put it back in the Krowtann. you over neut. the cape.

goerge, i believe that it could have been poor feild care

this cape job was done by the hunter in a motel room late night crash to get ready for the trip home. he didn't want to the guide x tra so he did it himself....
and i think you are right, it is the epidermis that is falling out. around the eyes. i do have some stop rot, do i apply it now? i have froze the cape as soon as i saw this and i needed to adjust the form a little.
so now what do i do? is there anyway to save this cape? or should i get a differant cape? thanks
