Are auto tanner any good, are they hard to use? And how do you learn how to use them? what's the scoop?

place hide and tanning liqued inside, close door, add 35-50 lbs. of air, turn the motor on, set the timer for 3-4 hours. Done.

Autotanners work great. They do exactly what they say they will do. They are very easy to use. But, there is really not much about them that is automatic. You still have to flesh and shave your capes or hides. "Pressure Pickler" might be a better name for them. They definately speed up your pickling time.
Since I have started using Krowtan I do not use my autotanner very much. It is just as easy to bucket tan. I do occasionally "autotan" a cape using Krowtan, if I need one very fast. I have had much beter results using Krowtan instead of the pickling crystals, in the autotanner.
