Split/turning Coyote nose

I'm in the process of preparring a Coyote hide and i'm confused on exactly how to turn the nose. As I look at the nose from the inside I can see the center section of the nose (olo) -center section of the little drawing, o= nostriles, from what I have watched it shows making a cut down the center of the cartlide but when I do this I don't seem to get any material to work with,it seems like all I did was cut cartlide through the nose. Any sugestions on what I'm doing wrong.

Jason, that cartlidge has to come out. Hold your fingers under the outerpart of the nose, and press gently down on the cartlidge with a sharp blade. It should go right down to the nose pad. Be carfull not to cut through into your finger. You can now flesh it out. I hope this helps, little hard to explain without being able to show you. Good Luck !

save the pad

The easiest way to say this is just save the whole nose pad...everything else must go..

go to this link and check out some of the pictures...this is an article i wrote for Glenn`s website. I explain how to thin the nose of a bobcat and have some good closeups...I usually just split the center cartlidge and leave it that way until after it`s tanned. Then I do the final thinning...the meat will be easier to work with once it`s tanned...good luck
