The tars and nicotine in cigarette, cigar, and pipe smoke permanently stain antlers. They become "waterproof" and cannot be washed out. The ONLY cure I ever found for this was to remove the antlers and leave them out in the hot summer sun for 4 or 5 months. The sun will bleach them and then you can restain them, but other than that, it's there to stay.
....Oxyclean will remove the stain......And sometimes it DON'T.
George are you starting to give up that easily? griz I have seen George himself answer this question a few different ways in the archives. Maybe what he is telling you with all you have tried you may have set the stain. I don't know. And yes I have been looking cause I just got 9 or so sets that are in bad shape. Even ran across one in 2002 I think, were that long winded bag full of Information guy called Cur said check the archives its been answered dozens of times. How bout bug and tar remover, I going to try that and oven cleaner. but these are mine to experiment on So..
I would give one of those mr clean magic erasers a try, they seem to do an amazing job on stuff around my house....
Sorry I haven't been able to get back to you sooner, I found a product at Farm & Fleet called Cowboy Magic that works on smoked mounts, depending on how bad it is.
The birds we talked about earlier I could use but I have the freezer full at the moment, that's also why I haven't been able to gat back with you sooner. Let me know how the Cowboy Magic works and I'll get back to you on the birds soon. Good to se you Don
Grizz,
I know the answer to this problem. I have cleand and restored smoke damaged mounts either from cigaretts or by fire. I use a mixture of dawn dish liquid and cascade dish washing detergent. I mix all of it into a tub with some water and then lightly scrub the mount horns, skin and all. With the fire damaged deer the soot come right off, the same way with cigarett smoke. IT does not damage the horns or the skin. In the small areas of the horns use a hard tooth brush with the rest I used a soft scrub brush. Best of Luck
