A hide is rehydrated with water. A dried hide is wet down for about an hour, allowed to drip dry and then put in a plastic bag and refrigerated overnight. A pickle is a solution that is use to set the hair and prepare a hide for tanning. Nearly any acid can be used, but the preferred ones are the newer, "safer" ones. A pickle solution will have and maintain a pH of 1.0 to about 2.5 until the hide has been "pickled" properly. The name comes from the same solutions used on cucumbers. The "acid" used in them, of course, is vinegar and vinegar will work but is extremely slow in reaching the desired levels.
