I am a beginner working on my first deer. I have skinned, fleshed, salted, pickeled, shaved, neutralized, and tanned using Lutan-F. Instructions say after soaking in Lutan-F, remove, wash and let hang for 30 min., then apply oil on skin. My question is...after i removed from Lutan-F, I looked the skin over and felt like I didnt shave quite good enough. Most of the skin looked good but still had some(am assuming membrane) on it. Just didnt look thin enough. This is my first hide as well as first time with a fleshing machine. Instead of applying the oil, I shaved again. Now, do I have to put back in Lutan-F, and if so, how long? Or do I go ahead with the oil like instructions say? Not sure since I shaved again what to do now? Please help!

If your tanning process is complete, the hide is tanned, albeit in both thick and thin places. Shaving it before mounting is something I always do as a final touchup on most of my hides anyway.
Thank you for the input. I have never posted on this site but read it alot just for the information. It is very apparent that there is alot of expierence on this site, and I must say my hat goes off to all who are eager and willing to help newbies like myself. Without you alot of us would be sitting with our thumbs up our butt saying "now what"! So once again thank you for the help. JH
Hey
I did my first deer hide with the luten F a little while ago. I
actuly I did two one deer cape and one deer hide with the hair on.
I do not have a fleshing machine , so I did what I could my hand and I can assure you It wasn't thined down very much at all, it fact the deer cape looked like crap, but it still mounted nicely with no problems. The deer hide (from a different deer) was removed and fleshed right after the deer was killed so I was able to get alot of junk of of it, still just like the other one it was probly not thinned that much at all. However the deer rug turned out beutifully, with a nice white leather (after I sanded it down). It was my first time and I did use luten F so I can assure you that your hide is thin enough ( especialy if you have a fleshing machine, lucky you).
Any way best of luck to you
