How the heck do you install a septum? Can anyone send me pictures? Thanks!

You do it during the prep work on the form. Cut the grooves in the nose and slide them in place. I will see if I can find any other info and let you know....

For commercial work using a piece of textured plastic works great. Email me if you or anyone wants specifics.

I second the milk jug. I think it looks great. email me if you want directions
Milk jugs are OK, but I'm not so damned cheap I'm digging through garbage looking for jugs, cutting them out and then trying to paint them. They aren't that expensive. One sheet folded in half does the job for a single deer. That means for about a buck apiece, you can do a deer. No muss, no fuss, no wasted labor.
George can't you post without being a smart##%. It just so happens I am not so damned cheap I 'm digging through garbage. I have a day care center (uses about 6 gallons daily)that cuts out the textured pieces for me because they like to be a part of what I am doing. I like the results for commercial work. It's easy, looks good and I always have stock plus I can insert it and dremel the nostrils quicker than you think.
Before you post, why don't you think before you type BECAUSE you may not know the whole story. You can answer without degrading or offending people.... or maybe you can't.
I use them because i like them and i think they look better than the speed septum and i can make ten in about five minutes.
I have also competed with them and have not had any points knocked off for doing so.
Is Gina talking about the speed septums or the one piece inserts, but not the ones with the wings? I have used both and like the speed septum better. The inserts are easy enough And I probably do it wrong. I cut a slot out of the top of the nose after I have done the detail work. Then I drop the septum in and apoxie over it forceing it down into the nasil cavity. once it starts to firm up I blend it to the septum on the inside..I have also tried the milk jug thing and figured it was easier to use the tools for the job. I can't get the milk jugs painted as well as the other two and most of my milk jugs here are yellow.
There are so amny ideas! I guess what I am trying to figure out is septums in general. I have looked and the general area inside a deers nose and I was wondering if anyone could send me photos of thier work so I know if I am doing it properly. I cant seem to figure out how to make the transition from the inner nasal flesh to the septum smooth without losing the texure or the color with sculpting material. I have never seen a septum mounted buck. that isnt common around here, at least I havent seen any complete forms by anyone who uses them. Everyone has been so helpful! Thanks!
Gina, I think you would be way ahead if you where To buy a freeze dried nose from .... I can't remember, They had them at the world show and the EZ nose guy was set up with them I think it was matt thompson supply. Since I got mine the inside of my deer noses have greatly improved. the only thing I see that is different with them and a live deer IS some minor shrinkage. Photos just don't seem to show the same to me, they might.
Why take the chance that who ever sends you a photo of their work is right.
And ks and I had a personal tete-a-tete that I doubt either of us gained anything from. As I told him, if my sounding like a smartass seems to be taken as demeaning and personal, it's because I reacted to some part of their statement as the same thing. Perspective means a lot I suppose, but I am now, always have been, probably always will be highly offended when someone goes off on a tangent to degrade a product they don't use because it's "easier and cheaper" to do it their way. All you you should remind yourself that those two words should never be fit together in a conversation about taxidermy. If you want your customers to appreciate your craftsmanship, the very LEAST you can do it to make every effort to insure they get a professional product. As I told ks, this milk carton idea works, but the question didn't seem to be directed in that way. When we explained the way to use the Speed Septum, then we had to hear "easier and cheaper". It was NEVER implied that this was another way and what it's drawbacks might be. I explained that I've had emails in the past of people using this milk carton and Dremel tool idea only to be mounting the deer and the nose area cave in on them. You're working if FOAM, people and any infiltration of that foam weakens the structure. The Speed Septum makes a snug incision in the nose area and allows the HEAVIER PLASTIC to act as some support to the nose area when finished. Trust me on this one: if you screw up and Dremel that nose out too much and insert that thin plastic milk jug and your nose collapses, it will be neither EASIER or CHEAPER to effect a repair.
If you are intersted email me and I'll explain the procedure. I mount 60 -70 deer a year and have NEVER had a nose collapse. You can still insert a transparent septum with detailed inner nose work, after using a dremel, without damage to the nose area.
