I've been given 6 sets of caribou antlers that have been broken off at the bases. I intend to use most of them to make knife handles and the like but one set is peculiarly nice and I want to mount it.
I have two questions. First, what is the average distance between the bases of the antlers?
Second, there is still some blood inside the antlers even though they are not in velvet, are quite hard and brown. How do I get the blood out of them? Will it just dry up in time? I don't want to mount them and then a few months down the road have them start to smell! I have thought about throwing them in a pond for a few weeks but one thing stops me from doing that right now. I live in Canada and ponds are frozen to the bottom this time of year.
