I am working on my first deer mount. I have pickled, shaved , tanned the hide. the form is ready ...the hide is still damp. how dry does it need to be before i can successfully glue it to the form?

Go at it, depending on the paste you use, most of them will dry with the cape. Just be careful that you do not man handle the hair when it is wet. All hair will pull out when it is wet, it will lock in when completely dry. Be careful behind the ears, that skin is thin and you can push the skin right off pushing in earliners, or adjusting the ears to the form.

WHAT?

Mr T, what kind of tan do you use? If I had to worry about the hair pulling out when a cape was wet, I wouldn't be able to mount anything.

Much Thanks

I've never used DP. All my hides are tanned, and if you are having a problem with the hair pulling out of a tanned cape when you are mounting it, I presume you do not have a very good tan. What are you using to tan, or what tannery?

I use

Lutan F, Liqua tan, and McKenzie tan. I have no hair falling out or slipping, never. I was only warning a first timer about how you can make hair come out on a damp wet cape. No mater what tan you use, you can pull the hair out if not handeled with care. I wasn't talking to you.

I Agree

with MR.T I do in shop tanning now but have used hides from a tannery and you can pull the hair out of any hide that is wet. just because it's tanned doesn't mean you can manhandle it to much.

you guys better........
