Questioning Krowtan

How important is it to let the hide drip dry for two hours like it says on the bottle? I have tanned a couple of hides that were fresh, followed all directions for tan except I let the hide drip 45 min. Started to do finial fleshing set the ears and noticed slipage around the base of the ears. Has anyone else had this problem or is it just my lack of taxidermy knowlede. thanks David

in a washer or towel dry - if it was tanned you can let it hang there forever and you will not get slippage - something was wrong with hide b4 you started if you had slippage

hmmmm

Probably your lack of taxidermy knowledge =)

wet behind the ears

Both you and the deer are wet behind the ears. The base of the ear skin is thin, and when damp and soft, you can push the epidermis right off the hide when doing ear work. Handle with care until completely dry around the ears.

Tan hide slip from hanging and drying?

I have tanned a lot of hides and if I let them just hang and dry I never have a problem with them. It's called a dry tan. If I want to mount something like that I just use a little trick they call rehydrating and sweating. LOL I've mounted up hides that hung around for 3-4 years like that. If krowtann hides start slipping if they hang to long it sounds like that may be your problem. If thats not a common problem with it then I would say you had a crappy specimen to begin with or you are just too rough with your hides. Dan
