Need help with buying Airbrush Equipment

Submitted by Mike on 1/31/06 at 9:48 AM. ( MichiganMan6@yahoo.com ) 65.116.223.67

Looking into purchasing an airbrush set to help with my finishing work on the boar mounts I will be doing for the first time. So since I'm green in this area was hoping someone had some suggestions/advice on what to go with. Seemed like some hobby stores really pushed the Paasche single and double action. Also, what type of compressor I can/can't use. Any help anyone can give me would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I personally use a Badger 150

Hi Mike, I personally use a Badger 150. I was an art major in school and that is what was popular then. I've used it for years and love it. There are many out there to choose from. Some of the really good fish guys use an Iwata. Mine wore out and I just replaced my first 150 for 65.00 brand new on E-Bay. I used it yesterday. I think double action is better but that is only my opinion. Also I just bought a new air compresser for 100.00 at Lowes (oil less) it is great. My old air compresser was a Badger diaphragm "On Demand". I never liked that one but it did the job. Sooooooo take your pick but do a little research first. I hope this helps.

Paasche VL3

Been using this one for 20 years. I have used others but keep going back to the Paasche. For the money you can't go wrong. Some folks will recommend the single action for starting out, but the double can be set for single action use, and as you learn, you will use the double action more. Have Fun !

Thanks for the help

Thanks for all your help everyone. I'm just excited to get one and start getting used to it.

I'll go check out some air compressors at Lowes today at lunch.

the key, obviously is practice, practice and practice some more. Badger and Paasche and Iwata all are good brands and function well. I am partial to Paasche myself, but that is what I learned on years ago. I personally believe that getting used to a double action brush early is a good thing. Compressor wise, well there are all sorts out there and to start out with you may end up dealing with what you can afford. I would look for something with a good sized tank. On demand work, but can get on your nerves. What every you get look into a good filter system. Just my opinion. Good Luck.
