Sharpened on one side only. The handle is an integral part of the blade itself and to shave hides or fat, you use short swivel cuts with your wrist as you pull it towards yourself.

Here is all of the info that you need for a real Alaskan Ulu. Hope this helps. You can also make one yourself like all of the natives do by using a saw blade for for the metal and cutting out the shape like a half of a cookie or moon and on the bottom of the flat side you want to either weld or cut out with the rest of the shape a tee looking piece for the handle to attach to. Then just like a knife handle, use a chunk of antler and cut it in half long ways and attach it to the tee using brass round stock bar that is piened on both sides. www.alaskaulu.com

Bearman,
If you're going to use the Ulu to flesh with MAKE IT as suggested by Nain. The store bought tourist stuff, are junk for fleshing. To quote George from another subject, "about as handy as wiping your but with thistle". If you have an old saw laying around they make dandy ulu's. Only sharpen one side, flesh with sharp side down.
Mark.
