cape care out of town

Bob, Taking care of the cape when away from home is all important- especially with the once-in-a-lifetime things like sheep. Every situation is a bit different, if close to a freezer I would have him freeze the cape assuming it can be transported frozen on the return home. If there is any question that the cape would not stay frozen or be delayed much getting to the freezer salt would be the way to go. If the hunter is able to do a proper caping job and turn ears etc that's fine but if not and a taxidermist is available to him near the hunt I would suggest getting the taxidermist there to skin, split and turn and salt the cape. It's a real shame but many fine trophy capes ruin every year due to poor handling immediatly after the hunt. When considering the Dall Sheep, your hunter should make the cape care priority one.-Aaron H.

Alpha Fur Dresser in Anchorage, AK will take care of your sheep cape. Salt it down good in the field and you can drop it off with them. They are located 2 miles from the airport. They do a really good job on sheep and goat capes. Have them tan it for you and they will ship it back to you when complete. Better than taking a chance of losing a cape, especially a Dall Sheep. Pretty expensive to locate a replacement.

the guides in Alaska are required by state regs to know how to take care of the cape in the field and do so.. As a non resident he must hunt with a guide. I also direct my clients to use Alpha Fur in Anchorage, they provide a good and reliable service and tan.
