Hello everyone,
Okay, so I am trying the Ear Magic stuff and to tell you the truth, I am not too excited about it. Please help me here.
Here is what I do -
1) I mix together a tablespoon of Part A and a tablespoon of Part B
When mixing, the epoxy seems really thick (to me).
2) After thoroughly stirring together, I take the 1/2 inverted ear and
shove the Ear Magic in it. I then invert the ear and squeeze the
epoxy around to try to get it even. *** I have some trouble here
as I think I have it evenly distributed through out the ear but
as soon as it starts to kick areas in the ear seem to separate out
and get thinner. This leaves a less than desirable looking ear.
3) When the epoxy kicks, it kicks like really, really fast. I usually
don't have enough time to feather out the edges of the ears to a
sharp crisp edge. With bondo I had no problem.
4) People say this stuff is stronger than Bondo however I have had to
be very careful with it. I had one ear where I was trying to make
a final adjustment and the ear magic broke inside of the ear. I
was able to inject this area with some Polytranspar Epoxy and
"fix" it. I have taken some scrap pieces of the Ear Magic epoxy
and snapped them in half with relatively light pressure.
So... any tips or pointers, etc I would really appreciate.
Thanks, Mark

I tried it and had problems with it also. I beleive I will stick with bondo or earliners. Just my personal opinion.
Sounds like your mixing to much part B to part A. Take both containers of ear magic and put them in some warm water about 30 minutes before you use it, this makes it easier to mix. I usaully dip my hands in water and get out 1 equal size ball of both A and B make sure you keep your hands really damp and just knead the 2 balls together(the balls are about half again bigger than a golf ball for a average deer); I find that it is easier to mix it in this way than try and stir it. If this doesnt work try mixing some fiber glass chop in with it. It should harden in about 15 minutes maybe a little quicker. I tried it and never looked back.
Place in a fridge overnight. A cooler epoxy will take more time to set up.
its not the product i can tell you guys that
and you can get this stuff thinner than bondo period and it wont drum
now as far as your experiance
a couple of things you need to be sure of and aware of
the ear magic will not feel like its hard as glass as a bondo ear will
you will need to card it for a few days
and after that it will be fine
also you must open up all the way around and i even like to split
a little further and start splitting the cartilage at the very ends a little like im going to remove it(about 1/16 will do)
the ear must be clean also(i wash mine with kemal 4)
then i mix a even amount of a and b(i know it smell a little)
then i like to spread it on the cartilage
you can get complete coverage this way with minimal shaping
then i make sure i spread it around the edges first then i start to run my fingers vertically to shape the ridges(have good referance)
i like to put a small hole at the tip of the ear to get all the air out
once its to shape leave it alone for a few minutes
mount your deer up and card the ears afte for a few days
its better than bondo
you can get it thinner than bondo
and if your ear didnt have any meat or membrane and was clean
it will NOT DRUM
email me if want any further input

If this method saved time and money, I could see using it. Earliners are so qwick and easy to use, that I can't see using the ear magic !
also and I'm not quite sold on it either. I think for smaller ears such as on coyote, fox, cats etc it would be great. But so far with the whitetail I've done I think personally I may go back to the earliners. I have trouble ( and it's probably me ) getting it worked around nice and evenly, getting it thin on the edges without it breaking, getting the same ear shape on each ear and I hate carding!
I don't like taking the cartilage out of the ears either, as i always have trouble at the front of the ear, but I think I like the results of liners better. Like I said, it's most likely me, but since I only do this part time, I don't have a whole lot of time to practice with the stuff.
