Pics of deer, what do you think?

Submitted by km on 3/15/06 at 7:07 PM. ( kpez@bellsouth.net ) 208.60.225.42

I have just completed my 5th whitetail deer and was needing some thoughts and opinions on how I can improve. I am really wanting to start a part time taxidermy business but I want to make sure I can do satisfactory work for commercial mounts. I am giving links to some pics of this deer and would be very thankful to those who take time to look and give me some advice.

Nice Deer

You are really doing a super job if this is only your 5th deer that you have ever mounted. When I take a close look at it then I see that the nose and inside the nostrils are to black. I believe if you work a little harder on making your moduels better you will be seeing a significant improvement. Try to keep them flat like pancakes and not everyone of them the same.

On your right ear it appears that the hair patterns are not or should I say not in alignment with the blade of the ear. But, overall you have done a good job. Just keep looking at live references and you will be doing great. For someone who has just mounted 5 deer heads you will be super deer taxidermist when you mount your 100th deer head. Keep up the good work.

Good Deer, as John above stated you might spend a little more time on improving your finish work. ie; rebuilding the nodules on the nose pad and color blending at the nose, eyes etc. Don't worry about the time involved for now. It will take time to develop technique and methods that will work for you. I think maybe the ears could be split farther, seems there is some waviness going on , wont hurt to card the edges for a few days either. Good luck

you definitely need to card the edges of the ears to make them crisper - hard to tell but it looks like there isn't enuf muscle rebuilding on ears butts - they appear to be too close (the ears dont stick out enuf) -= overall it LOOKS GREAT!

Over All

A nice job.As the folks above have stated,The nose pad and Interior of the nostrils could improve some. It's hard from the camra angle to say exactly , but looks like if you left a little more to tuck in the nostrils and used a little less apoxie / black paint inside the nostrils you would get a nicer effect. Over all pretty nice work.Keep it up!

I thought it was nice

I agree with every one else on the ears. The right ears seems to have curled up on you a little but other than that I thought it was an excellent mount. I don't know a whole lot about taxidermy (i'm getting ready to do my first deer mount in the next day or two) but from my stand point you did a great job. Keep up the good work!
