i was thinking of buying a 17 HMR for woodchuck or fox. things of that size how would it be to sew up a hole from a soild point (NOT hollow points). how big of a hole dose it make.
Thanks Andy

I bought one of those last year. I wish I had bought the 17 center fire. That dang rim fie climbs close to 3" at 25 yards, 6" at 50 or something real close to that. It climbs like no other gun in my collection. It is so hard to get used to the bullet trajectary its not even funny. I finaly sighted in 1" high at a hundred. I shot a coyote squarely through the shoulders at 75 yards and he bucked and ran off. Never did find that one. Might be good for woodchucks though if you shoot enough to get used to the climbing bullets. As far as a hole goes. I shot 4 coon back to back at 20 yards right through the heart and only had 1 entrance hole with no exit in each that I could find. Them coons didn't even make it 5 feet. All layed out in a single file line.
In my opinion nothing compares. I bought a german built anschutz rifle about 3 years ago and i love it. I hunt or trap daily year round and it is with me every day. Ive shot beavers, coons, badgers (badger at 231 yards in the ear the other day-outstanding accuracy) porcupines, fox ,coyotes, finished off deer, even killed a hereford steer w/ it one day. Its a small bullett they do come apart awfully easy but game up to coyotes dont stand a chance. It usually takes a couple to finish a coyote but I keep shootin them till they stop too.
ACCURACY like no other rimfire cartridge ever dreamed of, mine will shoot 1/4 inch groups easy at 100. For the money marlin makes a heck of an accurate rifle. mines in my truck 365 days a year I use it alot I would highly recommend this calibre and hornady ammunition.
i will have to spend some more time in the gun shop..... o darn haha
A 17 HMR shooting 231 yards with lethality? Your firearm is exceptional, but that round is meant for crows. At 231 yards that thing would have to drop 4 feet.
ground squirrels out to 200 without hold over. I'm sighted an inch high at 100. The yote I whacked with her just puffed up and tipped over. He was at about 75 yds. For small game you can't beat it. I may be wrong but I don't believe anyone is making a solid for it. The only exit wounds I have seen are on the squirrels and well....you wouldn't be sewing those.
Ive been using the cci 20 grain game point for almost a year. Holds together great. Shot yotes bobcats coons and about a fifty pound hog. the bullet exited all of the animals cleanly. 2 inch drop at 200 zero at 100.
I have a marlin and its great.I use it for jack rabbits and snowshoe hair, foxes and ground hogs.It leaves a nasty exite hole with hollow points but is very accurate
Might want to check out this website before you go shooting mule deer with that thing. THEY say that if you are 1.5 inches high at 100, you'll be over 2 inches low at 150 and about 8 inches low at 200. That's quite a bit of hold over for varmints.
