Ok I just started tanning own capes. Used krowtann when it came to do final fleshing cape was wet, slimy not to my liking. So as I have always done with the use of my mini flesher I added Borax to the cape in order to do the final fleshing. Well I got to thinking and worrying about the borax that maybe it would raise the ph of the cape so when finished I washed it off in plain cold water Then towel dried it and rolled up in a towel to mount next day. placed in plastic bag to let it sweat overnight in fridge. Next day didnt happen so 2 days go by and I finally got it mounted. Could this have caused the hair to slip on an already tanned cape? Can hair slip on an already tanned cape that easy? I thought thats why we were tanning them to protect them fromn slipping, and that it should be protected after being tanned. Please help a newby out. Thanks in advance

it can happen

slip can happen at any time from it walking in the door, to getting it mounted. There is a rot slip, and a chemical slip. Take your choice. I think when mounting, it is more of a chimical slip, and sometimes a manual slip from pinching or pulling on the skin. Just my opinion.

Tumble

I would never store a wet cape that way. I tumble dry and then store overnight at most or freeze.

Even though you're supposed to skip the salting with Krowtann, I started doing it after I tanned a few skins with it and they didn't turn out quite how I expected. I do remember them being slimy before I started salting them too.

Borax

Is a product that is used in DP (dry preserve) and is not recomended to apply this to any cape that is going to be tanned. If it is, you must risne the cape extremely well before placing it into any tanning bath or a pickle. If left on it will raise the Ph of the skin and cause slippage. Also two day in the fridge isn't that bad but if water layed on a spot or two, it could have soaked into teh upper epidermis and that will cause slippage.
If you need to apply something to the cape so you can handle it better, try fine sawduct ( not pine) or corn grit extra fine. You'll now bw able to grap it and do the shaving your looking to do.

How do you rehydrate then before you put in the tan? Just wondering, because I also use KTann and was thinking about salting my capes just so I can sit them off to the side until I'm ready to use.

I don't have any relaxers or anything so I just put it right in the Krowtann for 4 days and stirred like you're supposed to and they come out fine. I had to salt my skins cause I don't have a freezer I can use.
