mounted my 5th deer last weekend, and i think everything that could go wrong did. first off i cut the cape a little short, i knew that was going to be a problem.
i test fit the cape and hmm it was too small..no way man! so i streched and pulled and wahlah! good to go. cut 2 inch off of form and was in buisness! my brother was helping me (he shot the deer) and droped an eye. see ya, i said one down one to go. my bigest problem was when we to put the cape on. mixed hide paste, dextrine base with hot water, and if i didnt see a flaw in an eye it would have been all over.
the paste set up in 10 mins hard as a rock! thought that #%^& was good for hours! mixed another in cold water...good for about 40 mins. dealt with it and persevered. problem was i had a lot of sewing down the back if you know what i mean. anyway i guess all is good i had some old paste that worked the way it should. allso tried epoxy sculp hide paste and it was allmost rock hard out of the new bottle, lot of work to get it to "putty up" not much good for me. Does anyone know why the hide paste set up so fast? so my next one i can take my time.

Are you sure you were mixing hide paste and not mache. They look alot a like ,dextrine hide paste should have been workable for days.
