Bear Hide question

Submitted by Barry P on 3/28/06 at 10:10 PM. ( janbarryplatt@mchsi.com ) 12.218.29.178

I fleshed a bear hide, salted it and am going to send it to the tannery. My question is; It isn't drying rock hard like my deer hides. Is this normal? Should I send it to the tannery in this state, or should it dry rock hard?

Any help is appreciated

Hi Barry, it takes a lot longer for a bear hide to get rock hard drying. I will put two fans on them and it still takes several days in a warm temperature. I usually leave them flat, with the fans on, and then start to fold them up, as the dry a little bit. But if it is, fleshed and salted real good, I would just ship it, but that is just my opinion. rw

I was having the same thing happen with my bear this past year, I sedn to Wildlife Galleries so I called them and asked about it and they told me that they like them to be 75% dry. You just dont want alot of grease left on it. I let my bear dry for about a week then send them. Good luck, Kevin

Thanks!

Thanks Kevin and RW. I appreciate your help. It is about 75% dry, so I will call the Tannery and see if that is good enough for them.

Thanks again!
