Problem turning ears

Submitted by David on 4/8/06 at 10:32 PM. ( 2thdoc@vista-express.com ) 208.60.76.55

This is my first coon. While turning the ears things went fairly
smoothly for about the first 2/3 of the ears then it was like
hitting a wall. Seemed nothing I tried would allow me to progress
any farther. What am I missing? Any advice would be much appreciated.

All you lacked was patience David. Take your time. I sometimes just
put a finger in the ear and use my other hand on the outside to hold it
and push but be careful if you try that so you don't run your finger right
through the tip of the ear. Mostly just relax and take your time it will
split fine. I wish I could type like these other fella's who can type
what they are thinking. I read mine and most of the time it doesn't
sound like what I meant. I'm too old I think. Anyway good luck and just
be patient.
Good Luck

Your probably right. After fleshing face, turning eyes, lips, etc.
it was getting pretty late, and I was very tired! I'll try again
with rested eyes. By the way after searching archives, would it be
any easier to complete turning ears after tanning (Krowtann)?

muc easier to turn the final...

1/3 after tanning - that is how i handle all of my mammals - i use a babseball bat that i had modified to fit up inside ears - i place it in a vise and then with a moderately sharp (not scalpel ) knife tug against the resistance of bat and touch with knife where ears are to be split - i have turned animals down to pine marten with this arrangement

Not sure of the shape of your ears, but try some stop rot if they are a little dried out. Rub a little on and give it some time to work, and it works wonders!
Another option is to inject just a little cold water / salt solution to rehydrate the ears, which makes them much easier to turn.
Type your same post in the search area again, as all of this information is in the archives.
