Hi
I have been doing deer shoulder mounts for about three years. I have only had deer brought to me within a few weeks of the kill. Today I had a guy bring me a deer that has been in his freezer for over two years. It was in a plastic bag and then put in a cardboard box. Can you suggest anything special that I should do while thawing this out? I have checked the archives, but didn't find exactly what I was looking for. I hate to just let it thaw and then realize that I have freezer burn and should have tried to thaw using stop rot, or salt water or something else.
Any suggestions on a product that I should have on hand when I start to let this thaw?
Thanks,
Steve

I've heard that Stop-Rot is just the thing for capes like this. Try it.
Stop Rot and a gallon of Denature alcohol to bathe the skin with.
And where would one purchase stop rot? I see McKenzie has a product called 'stop-slip' by Knobloch.
Thanks again,
Steve

a lot of good reading
Inject the stop rot in the ears nose and lips as it defrosts, and any other spots that look dried out.
Hi
Very interesting stories about stop rot on hidetanning.net. I ordered some today and can't wait to see what this cape looks like when it thaws out. If it worked on a cape that was in a freezer for almost ten years I'm sure my cape will be fine.
