You've got me confused. Are you macerating the skull or are you trying to bleach it?
George,I clean with beetles, but still have to degrease and whiten "peroxide".Rancid
Construction garbage bag, which is real thick plastic put the horns caps and skull in there and fill with water and tie with a tie down, unless is a 7 foot texas longhorn it will not fit there, Even a texas longhorn you can make a wood box longet than hors, line it with roof plastic and fill with water.
Some country stores and hardware stores still carry these. Degreasing couldn't be simpler. IF you insist on using gas/acetone/MEK, set it into the tub and use the sitz bath method. Tilt the tub and keep pouring it over the brain cavity. When you've done that awile, pour your chemical back into the container and fill the tub with HOT soapy water to rinse off residue and grease. Let dry. Mix your peroxide and paint it onto the skull.
Rancid, if I read this right you are talking about degreasing after the horns are off?
If that is the case, and you are going to put the horns back on afterward, then just trim the cores so that you have about 3" left on each side, that 's all you need to epoxy on the horns.
Are what I'm doing after the horns are off and the skull is cleaned.I like to soak in dawn det.to degrease and use 50/50 peroxide and water to start the whiteneng. Then I use the peroxide paste.I like them to be as white on the inside as the outside and don't seem to get that by just degreasing and using the paste. Thanks everyone you've all been helpful.Rancid
Peroxide (H2O2) readily gives off the extra oxygen when it comes in contact with ambient air and even quicker when water (H2O)is added to it. IMHO Dawn is too mild a soap to degrease something like a skull.
